I guess the title gives away the punchline of this story. But here goes anyway.
I have written before about using my tiny iPod Shuffle for audiobooks from Audible. I just finished the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey, and took the iPod out of my car, and dropped it into my purse so I could reload it with another book (maybe “Good to Great” by Jim Collins?) A few days later, I am looking for the iPod, and it’s not in my purse. I tell my hubby and kids: I’m looking for my iPod. I think it is lost. I put it in my purse, but it’s not there.
Fast forward a few days and just a few minutes ago, I found my Shuffle in the dryer. I hadn’t put it in my purse. I had put it in my pant pocket! My iPod had gone through a complete wash and dry cycle.
The Shuffle didn’t seem to have much of a charge, so I charged it. I sync’ed it. And, holy cow! The darn thing works! How amazing is that?
Tell me about your Washing Machine vs iPod adventures by voting in the poll, and posting your story as a comment below.
One more thing, for all you Shuffle owners out there who haven’t yet figured out the light codes, I found this page from Apple that explains them all: Understanding iPod Shuffle’s Status Lights.

My daughter’s shuffle was in her jeans that went accidentaly to a washing machine. We realized this after 10 hours.
Thanks to the various posts in this column I left it in a bowl of rice for two days and after charging it for three hours continuously it came to life. (Earlier when I tried charging it for the first 30 minutes it refused to blink. I almost gave up and started planning for a replacement.) My daughter is elated that all her songs are in tact.
Thanks All for your insights.

I have had my iPod shuffle for about close to 4 years now, I’ve washed it twice, but never dried. The 1st time I washed it I was bummed so I let it sit wrapped in a towel for about 3 months mostly because I forgot about it, and on a whim I decided to charge it to see if it worked. Lo and behold, it charged but all my songs were gone, and my headphones had been ripped apart by the washer. So the 2nd time I washed it was in 2009, I heard a noise in the washer and opened it, my iPod was there. I just sighed at my stupidity and let it sit on my dresser for about 3 weeks, and then when I charged it, it did the same thing, worked but no songs.
So tonight around 10:30 I heard a sound and opened my dryer, and sure enough, there is my cute little iPod, burning hot to the touch. I hope it’ll work in about a week, I’d be sad if it died after all we’ve been through xD Oh yeah, the headphones are, again, ripped apart. I tried to turn on the iPod since it had been in the dryer for a good 25 minutes, but it was a no go. I hope I didn’t ruin it by doing that . . . Oh well, stuff happens I guess. ~sigh~

Tonight. I came over to my moms house and did her laundry. Was being extra nice but not thinking, sister had IPOD in her pocket, don’t know if it was on or off. Realized it had gone through an entire Wash Cycle. Wouldn’t dare turn on. I had a cell phone get wet, no your supposed to let it air dry. So I have it underneath heater and waiting to dig up some Silca packets, or oxygen packets (would this work?, some food comes with those; beef sticks)
I am going to watch it by heater all day, than try silca packets in zip lock bag.
Any other ideas?

Around 3 days ago my mom got mad at me cuz i left my pants laying around my room and decided to wash them. I always check my pockets for money or sumthin before putting my clothes through a wash but my mom did not check my pockets and my new ipod nano 5th gen 16 GB got washed. I got it out before the drying cycle but hasn’t turned on since. After seeing how many people had their ipod working afterwards i think i will try to leave it near a heating vent or somewhere warm.

i hate my shiny BRAND NEW *got it 4 days ago) purple 6TH GENERATION ipod and i put it in my coat and my coat was really dirty, so my mom… well, you know what happens. Well, about 15 minutes into the washing my mom suddenly realized i had left my ipod in my coat pocket. It’s in rice now but since I didn’t lock the screen i’m afraid it might have turned on during the washing, in which case it’s totally fried…. right?
Well, I have no way of knowing so i’ll just cross my fingers for the next 4 days.
P.S. also, the earbuds are in there. idk wht’ll happen to them.

My iPod was washed the first time about 3 months ago. And last night my daddy said he thru my pants into the washer. And then he realized after the first wash that I had left it in them. I got upset and I wasn’t sure if it would ever work again. I sure hope it does. I loved that thing more than my cute pomeranian puppy. And I loveee her! But not much anymore since my iPod was my whole life. Thanks. Signed, Lexi

I forgot my Ipod shuffle was in my swimming shorts and proceeded to go swimming. When I had completed 30 lenghts of a 25 metre pool, I got out and realised what I’d done. It wouldnt work when i got it home, but after using a hairdryer and leaving it near a hot radiator for 2 days, i charged it up and I turned it on at 05.30 this morning and it’s still playing over 12 hours later. I’m hoping, judging by everyone elses comments it will continue to work. So pleased, as it was an engraved version from my wife. :o)

During school i was not as worried about the headphones as the ipod.Although after school i was curius 2 know if my $20.00 headpfones still worked. I tested them on my laptop that afternoon and they worked.I tried that window thing for 3 days and that did nothing.
Then i tried the rice thing for 5 days and that did nothing either. So i ended up giving up and got the alsome 5th gen i-pod nano!:>

My son’s Ipod 4GB 3rd Generation, just went thru the washer last nite, but not the dryer. It’s been missing for a week, and we had been looking everywhere for it. I found it. =”( I’m just sick over it, as it was his his 16th b-day present last year from me. Not even a year old yet. I probably goofed in trying to turn it on. I’ve been reading alot of posts tonite about putting it in rice, so that is where it now resides. Any idea how long to keep it in rice? He tried to plug into pc (another goof, I know), however 1 post I read said that it warms up by plugging into pc, and perhaps aids in drying. I will let you all know if it survives or if we will be having a funeral for it.

Not a laundry v. shuffle situation… Not dropped-in-pool, but a 2-minute SWIM in a pool — with diving at least 5 FEET underwater. I was stupid enough to leave my ipod shuffle 2nd gen in my swim trunks pocket and forget that it was there. I jumped in, dove down and swam underwater at least 5ft down (I was practicing holding my breath down there!) I was in for about 5 minutes until I realized it was in my pocket. I tried turning it on, and it didn’t work (which I later found out is the worst thing you can do; let it COMPLETELY dry before you try turning it on). I wasn’t able to dry it out right away, but when I did, I took it apart and used some canned-air to dry it off. I waited a day, put it back together. It’s trial and error getting it all to fit, but be patient and you’ll figure it out. I got an orange light when I turned it on, which went off after 2 seconds. I hit play, and it started blinking green for 2 minutes. I put it in the dock and connected it to my computer — itunes opened but crashed. I plugged and unplugged it again and it WORKED! It’s name even showed up! I can’t believe it!

month later i took it out and i didnt really expect it to work, but it did! But it takes FOREVER to go to menu and it bugs me sooooooooo much! and also the screen doesnt light up so i went to brightness and put it on the brightest it could be but it didnt do any good …. does anyone have some tips that could help me?

I washed and dried my Ipod Nano 8GB. I thought i had lost it and end up finding it in my sweater pocket months after it happened (i thought it had just completely dissapeared).I tryed charging it when I found it because I had remembered that I had washed that jacket. It works perfectly now. The only problem: it has water stains UNDER the screen. I cant get them out. Does anyone know any thing i could try? Maybe a change in it’s surrounding temperature? Something? I want to try everything possible before using my warranty because they usually don’t help with water damage. It doesn’t seem like that rice trick would work with my situation.
Also, I dropped my phone in a lake while fishing(i can be clumsy). It might have been in the water for less than 1 second. It started saying “USB Connected”. When I got home, I took the battery out and let it sit on the couch dry for a few hours. I tryed not to tell my mom. When she saw the battery out she said “What happened?”. I said nothing and changed the subject. I put the battery back in and put it on the charger. It worked perfectly fine.

My ipod shuffle went through the washing machine in one of my jeans pockets.
Once i took it out of the machine, i tried to turn it on and it didnt work, so i sat in the window sill so it could dry out.
it didnt work for weeks, but eventually it turrned on and had the little flashing lights, and it synced aswell.
When i turn it on it the little light has a long green light (charged), and when i press play it has another green light which means a song should be playing, yet no sound comes out the head phones.
I have checked the headphones in my laptop, and they work so i know its not the headphones. Any ideas anyone?

My iPod went through the washing machine but fortunatly I heard that putting an ipod in un-cooked rice would absorb all the moisture in the iPod; guess what, it worked! However all was not perfect because my screen had lost its brightness and was stuck on the lowest setting; I believe this is because I tried constantly to turn it on and it probably fried the lights attempting to power up. Also leaving it under a soft light for 24 hours may evaporate the water but I recommand un-cooked rice for anyother fluid.

I have washed both an ipod touch as well as a shuffle. We put the touch on the dash of my jeep and let it soak up some rays for about a week. What did we have to lose? We have done the same with the shuffle and it works as well. A friend had his in his pocket when he was trying to save a drowing victim. He just threw it up on his dash after the fact and forgot about it. His worked too..I think you have to give it at least a week. The touch doesn’t have as long of battery life as before the bath!

Ipod Shuffle, 2nd gen, into the wash (ugh!). And the dryer. I heard a mysterious clanking in my dryer last night and figured it was the zipper on my son’s sweatshirt, but nope. It was my iPod Shuffle sliding about the drum. I pulled it from the dryer and it wouldn’t turn on. The headphones – I tried them on my old 5th Gen. iPod and they worked, amazingly enough. I let the Shuffle sit overnight and decided to see if it would accept a charge. I plugged it into my car this AM and the orange LED blinked 3 times and then went out. I removed the iPod, turned it on and the LED came up green, and it plays perfectly. It even synced to iTunes right away. The only thing is that, although it’s just 3 months old, it looks like it’s 5 years old with the anodized finish removed from the sides of the iPod, from sliding around the steel dryer drum for nearly an hour.
I was lucky it wasn’t fried. I do NOT recommend drying your device in the dryer; mine was probably 120 degrees F when I pulled it out. I figure I got to it just in time, before any major damage had been done. I figure if it’d been the old Shuffle with plastic housing, it would have been warped and more severely damaged.

Mine went through the washer and dryer cycle. I am an engineer, and I work with electrical engineers… they wash circut boards of in the sink all of the time!!! They said that the most important thing is to MAKE SURE IT IS REALLY DRIED OUT BEFORE YOU TURN IT ON!!!! I let mine sit for a week before it tried to charge it.
So far it is working fine, I am doing a test to see how long it will hold a charge, but so far it looks good.

My little brother did a similar thing. He has a 2nd Gen. ipod nano, and he put it in his swim trunks, and then forgot about it. Well, about an hour later we went to the pool, and obviously, took his ipod for a little swim also. He didn’t think about it until we were sitting outside, and he ran over to his swim trunks, where he had left them out to dry. There he found his ipod. We all assumed it was dead, but he put it in the fridge, to take the moisture out, and planned on buying a new one. Now, he just plugged it into the computer, and it turned on, but the computer didn’t recognize it…. and I think the battery is dead. But, we’ll see. I’m just surprised it survived to this point. 🙂

After 4 days of drying, and I plugged it into USB, the apple logo appeared but then fuzzed out. This is because the battery is so dead that it doesnt hold enough power to keep the iPod running when connected to USB. On AC power on the other hand, it works as if nothing happened to it. AC provides a lot more power than USB. All my songs are still there, and play but I just cant sych anymore so I am going to get a new battery soon.

soooo today i was doing laundry..and i had misplaced my ipod a week ago…and i thought i checked all of my pockets..but 5 minutes after i had placed the load in the dryer…i heard a loud banging sound..and searched the entire load.. unitl i came across my little dead ipod..=(
so now all i have to do is pray..and try to let my ipod dry…while i go on vacatiopn without any music!!!!! (i’m gonna go insane on the plane ride)
so please refrain from putting yours..or your sons ipod..in the dryer, wahser, toilet, incinerator, disinigrator, smasher, basher, uhmmmm, masher?
yeh..so… BEWARE OF EVIL APPLIANCES…
and idiotic actions..(taken by you or by those you love)..or hold a grudge against because of past incidents involving ipods..or other precious things you hold most dear
so pray for my little tyke..and hopefully he’ll pull through..
=[
=(
=l
=P
=D
i’ll live..and so will you…

Well, due to my stupidity, i left my ipod nano 3rd gen in my pants, and it went through the washer. Just the washer, not the drier, which may be have been better. It doesnt turn on, but the backlight comes on when its plugged into teh computer, and i cna play music off it through itunes. My hope is that after drying out for a few days ambye the screen will work. *prays* please

I, too, discovered my shuffle in the washer after leaving it in my pants’ pocket by mistake. I went online to see if there was any hope and several people wrote that theirs had survived so I dipped it in rubbing alcohol (You may not have to do this and I should have used the strongest type- not rubbing alcohol-which contains water)and left it on a warm spot on my heater (not too warm) for a day. I had turned it on when wet and saw that that was a no-no but after it was dried, charged and re-synced the light came on and sound returned! YAY!Even w/ mistakes, it worked.

My ipod also got washed and dryed. I thought it was a gonner for sure ! I was thinking of buying a new one. A couple days later I was thinking maybe just maybe the ipod had no charge on it . The washer had to have taken out all charge. I put it on the charger and the light came on! I thought wow this may work!. I let it get a full charge and it was flashing I had no songs, I went into itunes and it came up did I want an update on my ipod, I clicked yes and all the songs are there and it works great!!! To all out there wait a couple days and then see if it will work!

i just put my ipod nano 3G throught the wash and dryer on Christmas Eve, and after looking online i saw there was still hope as long as i didn’t turn it on when it was wet.
After keeping it under a lamp to dry out the moisture under the screen for a day or two i plugged it in and it worked.

My step daughter washed my iPod shuffle and she was SO upset. Balling her eyes out, I felt so bad. It was both of our fault but thank you Apple, I plugged my shuffle it to sync it and it works!!!!!!!!!! There’s hope for us all 🙂

I went swimming at the beach today. I removed all the the things in my pocket, the belt, etc. Went swimming for an hour, and guess what i discovered?…my ipod shuffle clipped at my pants! Damn!… I cursed myself for an hour or so, calmed down, washed the ipod with soap and water, blow-dried it,and voila! …… nahhhh, if u expect a happy ending, no, not yet! I havent turned the damn thing ON yet. I will let it sit for a day or two, then turn it on. Wish me luck!

lucky you, My ipod is dead after washing it.
I let it sit for a week, turned it back on last night, it blink endlessly for ten mins or so, all lights, couldn’t play or turn it off…ten mins later, it died. It hasn’t turned on since. =(
my hopes are gone.

I just put my iPod shuffle through th wash, and it survived also. I was shocked. It didn’t work right away, but I put it in it’s cradle and it immediately came back to life. I’m blown away. I felt sick for two days though until I got home to give it a try.

Last week I dropped my Nokia 6682 phone into the only open soft drink cup I’ve had in my vehicle in the last 5 years. It wouldn’t do anything except light up the camera flash (not by design). I disassembled it and cleaned it and dried it and reassembled it and now everything is good except the microphone. I can only speak through my headset…..I’ll take it apart again and try to fix the mic. I hate it when that happens!!

I ran my verizon phone through the washer and dryer. I could make calls. I could receive calls. The LCD? Dead. I had to go get a new one, and it cost fifty bucks for another cheapie, in which the battery was chronicly crap. I think it kept a charge for all of about twenty minutes at a time.

Cell phone pops out of belt clip while in the bathroom. You guessed it, falls directly in to toilet. One side of the brain says I’m not sticking my hand in there and the other side quickly calculates cost of new phone or cost of breaking contract to get free phone. Hand loses and grabs phone. A few quirky problems over the next two days but it fixes itself; probably dries out. This was about a year ago. I don’t use a belt clip anymore, my pockets work just fine … maybe. Two weeks ago, same phone, wife does laundry without checking pants pocket and the phone gets washed. The time is a little odd but it still works. I think service agreements on cell phones is a rip off. The phone is a Motorola Razr.

lets see: 1) cellphone (nokea 1100) washer and drier 2) 3or 4 usb drives 1 of them a number of times (those usb drives are tough) 3)a wifi detector with a display and wireless G adapter (i had to take that apart and clean it with alcohol) 4)a cheap mp3 player
all worked after a good drying and in a couple of cases a wash in 90%+ rubbing alcohol it displaces the water and evaporates almost completely in miniuts

I am not so fortunate to own an ipod, however, I find your story an amazing tribute to the product, definitely would choose their product were I in the market!
