About an hour ago a woman in a silver BMW X5 SUV backed into me at a street light where I was waiting behind her to make a right turn. She got out of her car, looked at the damage, and started talking about wanting to make a left turn. As I was rummaging through my purse for a pen, she walked back to her car and took off!
I stood in the street, shell shocked, and watched as her car sped away. I knew I was supposed to memorize her license plate number, but all I could get was “XXXX.” A very kind young man on a bicycle (I later learned his name is Joey) offered to chase her down. He returned a few minutes later, saying he lost her on a turn. Another kind soul, a construction worker who saw the whole thing, helped me get out of the road (I was pretty shook up) and helped me find the blinkers on the brand new dashboard. Did I mention my car is just ten days old?
The police came, and took a full report. I was pretty upset with myself that all I memorized was a partial license plate. But about half an hour into the report process, I had a vision of the last 3 characters. “Try 123,” I said to Rena, the police woman. Nope, no match. “Try 122.”
Up came a local address for a silver BMW. Now the police have a name and an address. I don’t think they are going to charge her with “hit and run” because I was okay .. but at least I know that her insurance company will have to pay … and that she didn’t get away with it.
Everyone on the street was so kind. One of the other construction workers even gave me a bid for the damage. He thinks it will cost $800 to fix my bumper. But I’m okay, it’s only money. And hey, my insurance company says that if they track her down and take her to court, I won’t even have to pay my $500 deductible.

so glad they found the culprit. Howlong did it take for them to track her licens plate to her address? Was it in that same night?

Barbara,
I am sorry to read about your hit & run experience.
I am currently looking for some help with my own incident. Yesterday, I was riding my bicycle when a driver pulled in front of me, leaving me no time or room to negotiate around him/her. After somersaulting through the air at 20 miles per hour & landing on my butt, the driver sped away!!! I was able to get the last 5-digits of the California license, along with the make/model & approximate year of the car. However, I was told by the CHP officer taking the report that there is no way to find the vehicle without the entire 7-digits.
I am now pretty shaken, mad, bruised, & left with a bike that may need to be replaced (it is a very expensive bike I use for triathlons & training). I am also very thankful that my injuries were relatively minor. Nonetheless, I would like for this person to take responsibility for this horrific action.
If you or anyone else who reads this can offer some suggestions on how to find this person so they can be held accountable, I would appreciate it. If I am successful in finding a way to track this person down, I will post here so that perhaps others may benefit.
-Bob

I was also the victim of a hit and run at my home! My car was hit by a UHAUL truck. Fortunately I was not in the vehicle as it was parked outside my house. Things have finally gotten settled. Best wishes on a speedy recovery (emotional or otherwise)!

It could have been so much worse- I have to keep telling myself that as three years down the line I have just had another operation on my legs following an accident caused by a policeman. He was overtaking on the brow of a hill and hit me head on. He didn’t even come to see how I was in my poor squashed car which was a total right off. The accident happened on a lonely country road in Cumbria UK and I was lucky that another driver came upon me, stopped and checked to see if I was OK. He called for help. Unfortunately the ambulance got lost and it took over an hour to get to me before the firemen could cut me free from the car. Hopefully one day I will walk again and I might even get an apology from the policeman!!

It is sad that there are people in this world that think the laws do not apply to them. In any case, I am glad that you are right and that there were people there to give a hand.

You did better than I — my car is being repaired as I write for the same thing–hit by a teenage boy who hit me head on and drove off (I was shocked and shaken and did not get ANY of the #s on his license!) As with you, another showed kindness–a kind lady stopped to see if I was OK and to give her name & # as a witness. Unfortunately, that doesn’t negate my $500 deductible that his insurance would have had to pay.

there are more good people in the world then u think but good to hear a story like yours to be reminded of that. glad everything worked out and only the car was hurt.

Glad you are OK Barbara. It’s a horrible experience.
I had a taxi do a U turn on me & my car was written off. Luckily he couldn’t get away. Lots of people were wonderful helping me after the accident and offering to be witnesses. You hear so much about people who don’t want to know but there are some fantastic people around who restore your faith.

Isn’t amazing just how kind people can be when you are least expecting it? Cheers to you Barbara, for telling us about your unfortunate mishap (glad you are okay) and the nice acts of kindness that you received.
