Attention cat lovers, armchair travelers, wanderlusters, cord-cutters, and hygge* aficionados: this one’s for you! KEDI is an independent Turkish film about the street cats of Istanbul, and the people who love them. It’s a heart-warming, visual feast for cat people, people people, and those that love to travel.
I loved the film because of its focus on the interaction between the people of Istanbul and “their” cats. I’ve never been to Istanbul (my Turkish travel was limited to a beach holiday at the ClubMed in Kusadasi), but the cat scene reminded me of Jerusalem. Here’s a snapshot of the Jerusalem neighborhood stayed in recently.
Where to Watch KEDI
So, back to KEDI (which means pussy cat in Turkish). Where can you see it? You try and catch it in a movie theater near you, but it’s an art film, and distribution is limited. Or you can enjoy it at home (squee!) when it debuts May 10, 2017 on YouTube Red.
About YouTube Red
YouTube Red is Google’s unlimited, ad-free video, music, original series, and movie service. The price is just $9.95/month, and it includes access to Google Play Music across all your devices. Not only will you get to watch KEDI in the coziness of your own home, you’ll probably get your first month free (depending on the current offer when you read this!)
*”Hygge” is the Danish concept of coziness. Watching an art house film at home is hygge. Driving through traffic to watch it in a theater surrounded by strangers is not. Hat tip to my friend Lois Alter Mark for bringing hygge into my consciousness, and to YouTube Red for providing me a KEDI screening in exchange for my thoughts.

It sounds like a fun film to watch not only to see Turkey but because animals always make it fun. Thanks for the review.

My favorite is watching movies at home with a fire roaring in the fireplace.

Thank you for the shout out! I agree that watching movies at home on the couch with a cozy blanket and a bowl of popcorn is very hygge! This movie looks great, and I can’t wait to see it. Will have to check out You Tube Red, which I never heard of before but sounds like a really good idea.

You are welcome! There is a time and place for going to the movie theater. But recently, there have been much less of them. Hygge and streaming for the win!
